Corpse in the Mirror

At the end of Night, Wiesel writes: "From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me. The look in his eyes as he gazed at me has never left me" (p. 115). What parts of Eliezer died during his captivity? What was born in their place?

  1. While Eliezer was at the concentration camp he lost many things. Not only his dad and his shoes and clothes. Eliezer lost things that you can't physically see. He lost his warm heart and in place of that came hardness and hate. He also lost his dignity, in place of that came shame and self-pity. He lost his sanity, turning crazed and mad. There was so much that he lost that he would never get back because the things that he lost, were lost at the concentration camp and there was no turning back.

  2. Christelle, what an insightful post! You acknowledge the loss of the intangibles (things you can't touch) and your word choice -warm heart, hardness and hate (great use of alliteration), dignity, sanity- makes your post enjoyable to read.

  3. In the process of moving from concentration camp to concentration camp Eliezer changed a lot. He lost a lot, and he gained a few things in their place. Some of the things he lost were his family members, money, clothes, food, and comfort. These are the objects and people he lost, but Eliezer also lost parts of himself as a person. While suffering Eliezer lost faith in God. In place of faith grew doubt. Eliezer began to question God and how good he is. He also lost the innocence of a child, and it was replaced with a lot of anger. He witnessed so many horrible things that a child should have never seen. He also had no choice but to loose the rebellion of a child and he gained obedience in place of that. The last thing that he looses can never be replaced. These things are courage and strength.
